Man by nature since the fall is a guilty creature, and being guilty is ready to be jealous of God, as if all his designs were designs of wrath against him. Yea, oftentimes so suspicious is man of God that he is jealous of the hardness of his design, and that that which is one of the greatest instances of his love in the world, and that is in sending his son Jesus Christ into the world to save sinners. But I come to one use for this doctrine, if it be so that the Lord hath been pleased to give such instances of grace in encouragement for the worst of sinners to close with Christ in order to life everlasting, then you may see that instances of grace are not given you to encourage you in sin; it is that it may be a pattern to them that believe. The reason is not that ye should continue hard and secure and delay your confession, but you can believe; for I assure you the riches of the grace of God hath no tendency to at all to make folk secure. One word further, that is delay no longer, you have have put it aff before and since the sentence, ye've been much dealt wi', and now it comes within a day of your stepping into eternity; and we are come to you the day before your death entreating you put it off no longer. O be serious!
